Interior decoration

All you need is: a wreath, I used a straw wreath I've had for ages and never knew what to do with it, some fabric scraps, ribbons, buttons and felt. Wrap the fabric around the wreath (I secured the beginning and end with some pins), sew little rosettes and cut out some leaves from felt and attach them with buttons to the wreath. Add some ribbons if you like and you will create your own, very unique decoration (mine has found its place on my sewing room door, could you guess :-)

After I sold all the girls coats at the last Flower Show in September, I really needed to fill the space on the clothes rail with new ones. This Quintia has been lying around, cut and ready to sew, for a good couple of months but somehow there was always something more urgent to do. Anyway, I finally finished it yesterday. The outer fabric is spinacker and it's lined with pink baby cord. Embroidery design from Huups!

New dress

Do you know the problem? You buy tights and then you find your child has nothing really to wear with it (well, except a denim skirt). So what does woman do? Sew a dress to match them!!!
The pattern is from the Ottobre 6/2007, the HILDA dress pattern. I had to shorten the sleeves (they are always too long for some reason) and added some contrasting Campan jersey for some colour. The hood is lined in plain pink jersey, oh yes, and the brown fabric is jogging sweat. It is already a favourite with Leoni, but now definitely ready for the wash...

Update on the house

There is not much work going on on the outside just now, but even more in the house. My sewing/work/stock room is nearly finished. It went from this

25 m² all to myself, where I can lock the door and not have to tidy up after I've done some sewing. My cutting table still has to go in, some decoration and curtains up, but I'm soooo happy!!

... for the Christmas party at school today I finished Leoni's "Christmas" dress. The pattern is the Duo Tone balloon dress from the OTTOBRE magazine 6/2011 and the fabric is purple fine cord embroidered with a star and reindeer (she insisted on having them on her dress :-) And as she didn't have anything to go with it I made her a jersey turtle neck top in navy jersey.(OTTOBRE pattern issue 4/2007).

Update on the building work

We have reached the messy stage now: the painters sanded the walls this morning and the whole house is now covered in a thin layer of very fine dust!!! Let me tell you, it is EVERYWHERE. But the workers have been so very busy, the first layer of paint is on and next week the floor gets laid and the raidiators will be fixed, so we finally will have a warm house again :-)

It doesn't happen very often, but when the last OTTOBRE women came through my letterbox, I fell in love with the pinafor dress Bubble Pocket. It is pretty easy to sew and I'm sure I'll use that pattern again. It only needs a few little changes, the top is a little loose so I think I'll use a size smaller next time and the facing ends right on my bust, so that needs lengthened. This one is made in lime babycord.

Our house

You now probably ask why I'm posting a picture of our house, right? Well, firstly so you all know where I live :-), but more important: we are getting an extension build! Yippee! It's been in the planning for over a year and now work has finally started. It is going to be a 2-storey extension, two bedrooms upstairs, a utility room downstairs and the most important room of all: my fabric and sewing room! No more sewing on the kitchen table, I will have a separate room where I can just shut the door behind me. Great!
And to keep you all informed about the building process, I will post some photos every now and then. Fingers crossed the frosty and snowy weather will stay away for a long time!

It's been two weeks already since my last post, I just don't know where the time goes.... Does anyone feel the same? The schools are off AGAIN for the October holidays, which means a slightly different routine to our day just now and not much time for sewing :-(

Up until now when going to craft shows I've always been using an ordinary bum bag for the change. Ok, it was leather one, black, but still pretty boring. But that is going to change: I've made sort of an apron, well not the ususal type of apron with ties, but one a bit asymetrical and with poppers. The pattern MAYTE from Farbenmix was perfect for the project, I just added a pocket with a zip for the money and a small pocket for pens, scissors, etc. and ready it was: my halfway fashionable, very useful new money-apron-over the trouses-wrap skirt-thingy!

Leoni has grown out of most of her trousers from last year- if it was for her, she would only wear skirts anyway - but nevertheless I made her a new pair. I think children should wear colourful clothes and I really don't like black on them at all. But with this lovely black denim I have in the shop (it might wash out a bit? hopefully:-) I didn't have much choice: and combined with a lot of COLOURFUL ribbons and pink topstitching I think we get away with the black.

The Flower and Food Festival was again a very successful event and I had a bit of a breather last week, not "having" to sew anything or finishing something under time pressure. But as you can see from the photos, I just can't do without any sewing for more than three days :-)) My mum sent a new winter coat for Leoni and we needed something new for the head, so I tried out this balloon cap made from pink cotton and grey babycord.

After all the girlie stuff I made recently it was about time to sew something for boys. I really enjoy not having to use pink, red or purple :-) There are so many nice patterns out there for boys, especially in the the OTTOBRE magazines, and the pattern I used for this hoodie is from issue 1/2010. I slightly altered it by completely lining it with the robot jersey as I felt the navy spinacker fabric was a bit too thin.
It is quite a time consuming pattern I must admit, especially the front pocket, which alone took about two hours. But I'm very happy with the result and I hope it will find a new owner soon.

Quite frequently I get requests for Farbenmix patterns that I don't have in stock. Sometimes, if urgent, I order them separately for my customers, but that also means that there are extra postage costs involved. And typically, most queries come AFTER I've just ordered. And for that reason I thought it might be not such a bad idea to ask you BEFORE I'm due to place an order. Should have thought of that before!

Anyway, I need to order new stock next week and if there is anyone wanting a Farbenmix pattern that I don't stock, please email me until Sunday, 31st July and I will get it for you. This way only my normal postage rate of £2.80 (UK) applies and you don't have to pay extra shipping costs from Germany.

A successful weekend

It has been a very successful weekend at the Glamis Transport Extravaganza. The Saturday was quite a washout with heavy downpours throughout the day (and a leaking tent wasn't very helpful either), but there was sunshine on Sunday and lots of customers coming to the craft tent. Thanks to all who came along!

Leoni is going away on holiday with my mum next week and as we are always a bit short on trousers I made her this pair of cropped trousers. It is the IVY pattern from Cinderella Zwergen Mode, the front legs are longer than the back and also ruffled. I chose a beige silicone poplin only embroidered with some flowers so they will go with most of her t-shirts.

These trousers have been on my to-sew list for some time. It is quite an unusual pattern - I like unusual - as the trouser legs are twisted! Not difficult to sew at all, you just put them together like any other pattern, and voilá - they come out twisted. The little apron is attached to the front with Kam Snaps. The first time I've used them and I LOVE them, they are so easy to apply and they come in thousands of different colours!

I've been away to Holland for two days, fabric shopping for the new autumn/winter collection. Oh, there are very nice things coming soon, I'm very excited about it. The new season is going to be very colourful, although I was a bit disappointed to hear the the Bizzkids magazine will not be published anymore :-( Instead they are doing single patterns, I haven't seen them yet though so don't know what they will be like.

My mum came over from Germany and we had a lovely time together. It takes her only 2.5 hrs in the car, so I suppose it hasn't been the last time for us to meet there :-)

A visit to the castle

My aunt and uncle were here for a visit last week and we took them out for some sightseeing. We went up north, about an hour from here, to Dunnottar Castle. Not a proper castle, more ruins, but at a great location with stunning views:

And on the way back we came through Arbroath and stopped for some ice cream and fresh smokies. It's a lovely small fishing village, where you can sit at the harbour and watch the boats come in. Such a lovely place!

After some discussion about what fabric the coat was going to be made of, Leoni and I agreed on plain denim with red/pink fleece. Sort of neutral. Leoni wanted a completely different fabric, but I didn't. So we kind of met half way. But as the blue by itself was quite boring, my embroidery machine had to get active again :-)
I made the coat in a size 122/128, still quite a bit on the big side, but this way it should still fit in autumn.

El Porto

And this is the result: another bag and another one for me :-) It is the truly unique El Porto from Studio Tantrum. You can fit a LOT into this bag with its many pockets and I think I will use it for my swimming stuff. So far Leoni and I have been sharing her El Porto I made last year, but now that I've got one of my own, we'll bring some colour to the changing room (we go swimming together once a week :-) It is made from various remnant baby cords. A good way to minimize the fabric stash:

I got this viscose jersey from Hilco last year (I could only get 2m, not enough to list in the shop, selfish me:-) and since then it's been waiting for the right pattern to come along. Whilst browsing my old Ottobre magazines I came across a pintuck tunic (issue 2/2008) and that pattern seemed just right for this big patterned fabric. And here it is, my tunic à la Desigual:

It sits really nicely, no alterations needed. I only lengthened the sleeves as the original pattern has 3/4 sleeves. I'm very happy with the result and even Alan likes it. It is very likely to become a favourite piece in my wardrobe :-)

The bag I made for me last year needed replaced as it is looking very shabby now from every day wear. I went for the same pattern again as I love the shape: the over-the-shoulder bag is great for window shopping in the town or just doing your grocery shopping in the supermarket. You have your hands free for carrying all sorts of things or just holding your kids hand.

And as I like things matching: a phone and tissue holder for in the bag.

New sewing magazines

I am very excited to announce the arrival of two new sewing magazines in my shop: Young Image and My Image. A sewing magazine from the Netherlands for girls (I know, again not for boys) and women, each containing 16 trendy designs. And it comes with English instructions as well as Dutch, German and French.

We had four amazing days at the Creative Stitches Show in Glasgow. It was lovely to meet some of you in person that I've only known through emails. Thanks for coming!

It wasn't just a day or two, this virus knocked me out for almost a week. I didn't plan this at all and now I have a lot of catching up to do, sewing wise. This outfit is a JULE jumper and a ZUCKA skirt, both in size 86/92:

That's me just now: one moment shivering like mad the next feeling too hot. I suppose that's what you call being ill. Don't like it at all, must have caught this ugly virus from my darling daughter. Hate it, want to be ok again, but it could have struck me at a more inconvenient time I must admit. So just have to be patient and hope it goes away soon, grrr.

The shirt is the "Eleven and one" pattern from the latest OTTOBRE magazine, fabrics are Toeff-Toeff and Campan jersey from Hilco. Very easy and quick to sew. Another item struck off the to-do list :-)

I have started the preparations for this years HobbyCrafts and Stitches Show in Glasgow. Although I'm mainly taking the materials, I also need some finished clothes to "decorate" my stall. Here is an Antonia shirt in different jerseys, ribbons and crochet flower.

Bizzkids summer 2011

The new Bizzkids summer 2011 is available in the shop now. 35 lovely designs for girls (only 1 for a boy!), from trousers, tops, tunics, dresses to skirts and leggings.

Party bags

... of a different kind. Leoni turns seven on Saturday and this year I thought I'd make the party bags myself. I admit, I would have been MUCH easier (and cheaper) to buy those flimsy plastic bags, which hardly get looked at by the kids and are only there to carry some sweets. And thrown away afterwards. These ones are made to last. Hopefully. But wether these bags are handed out to their new owners on Saturday is still very unsure, as Leoni has got tonsilitis and not well at all...
